Watford & District YMCA have a long standing reputation within the community for the provision of quality childcare and children’s programmes. Ranging from full time nursery care from 3 months and extending to youth development and fitness programmes for under 18’s, we pride ourselves on the high quality of our safe and effective provision.
We have developed 3 key areas of alternative sports for children, with
an opportunity for them to take part in these sports at either
recreational or competitive levels;
Charters Centurions Dodgeball Club, YMCA Volleyball Club and
Watford YMCA Boxing Club (ABA registered).
These clubs operate out of various centres providing excellent exit
routes for children who wish to increase or maintain their participation.
Programmes are also delivered into schools with qualified coaches.
Sports Specific training: Would your school sports teams benefit
from some specialist coaching knowledge? Charters can offer sport
specific coaching for your teams to help improve speed, coordination,
agility, balance and sports specific fitness and movement.
Are your pupils bored with the usual tried and trusted sports? Would
they like to try something different? Charters Health Club can offer
a multitude of different sports activities such as badminton, dodgeball,
lacrosse, volleyball, gymnastics and handball as well as more
traditional sports and multi sports. We aim to create a fun, enjoyable
yet challenging atmosphere for all children. Sessions can be delivered
during or after school and even as a weekend club!
Go scheme: Having trouble motivating your 13-16 year old girls to
take part in sport? The ‘Go’ scheme aims to teach mature exercise
classes such as Aerobics, Boxercise and Yoga to secondary school girls,
with the aim to increase their physical activity in a group exercise class setting.
Adopt a School: Adopt a School is an opportunity for school groups to come out to one of our three sports centres and try taster sessions in sport, health and fitness. The idea is to offer something different for the children and assist them in thinking about healthier lifestyles. The ‘open day’ can also be followed up with more in depth sessions, with coaches coming out to your school to take in school (P.E lesson or PPA cover)or after school activities.
Based around, fun, enjoyment and interaction within the family. Children (7 and over) and all the family are invited to take part in activity and fun games, with the chance for socialising, relaxing and being healthy
MADE (Mums And Daughters Exercise) Programme: This program is designed for mums and daughters to
take part in exercise classes together. Classes include introduction to Aerobics, Circuits, Step, Boxercise and
Yoga. The sessions are designed for daughters between 12-16 and their mums and can take place either at Charters Health Club or at Schools as an after school club.
Dads, Lads & Lasses: For the hardworking parents who just want to spend some quality time with their children. Dads, Lads and Lasses are designed to encourage dads (and mums) to take part in fun activities with their children. These sessions can take place at Charters Health Club or out at schools and include activities such as hockey,
football, circuits, kwik cricket and more…
MEND Programme: Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!
The MEND
scheme is a government run initiative to help overweight youngsters attend exercise and nutrition sessions with their family, with the aim to teach them about a healthy lifestyle.
H.E.L.P.: Stands for Healthy Eating and Lifestyle Programme. The aim of the programme is to offer basic information on some key aspects of good nutrition, and explores ways of increasing activity in everyday
life, in a way that is accessible to all. The 4 week programme can be adapted for adults, children or as a family programme and leads to healthier lifestyle choices.
Our summer activity programme focuses on fun and enjoyable activities for children aged 8-12. Qualified YMCA staff lead activity and sports based sessions between 9.30 and 13.00 four days a week during school holidays. The sessions take place at our Charters Highfield Park Centre in St Albans and our Woodlands Centre in Abbots Langley and aim to provide fun, enjoyment and an element of learning for the participants.
The YMCA is also happy to support PPA cover within schools by offering a programme of sport activity and creative play. Services can be tailored to the individual curriculum requirements of each school.
This is a constantly developing programme of activities and we are always willing to discuss additional or
alternative programmes subject to local demand and need.
Watford & District YMCA also work with young people on the following programmes: Princes Trust Volunteer scheme, Go Get it project, V Involved, E2E, junior play and nursery care
